The first thing I noticed after liberating the Kentucky Fire Cured Just a Friend Toro from the cellophane was it’s strong, clearly present, aroma of smokey barbeque.
Made by Drew Estate, who always seems to be cooking up something new and different, the Kentucky Fire Cured (a.k.a. KFC) has a somewhat dry wrapper. After cutting the end and torching the foot, you’ll get tons of flavor and lots of smoke to deliver it onto your palate.

Through the middle of the cigar, the flavors and aroma of smoked hickory and barbeque are very present. As someone who hasn’t had good Texas Barbeque in several months, these flavors were welcomed. However, they might be a little much for you.
The draw is very consistent, and the burn is even, but those smokey flavors offer up a little bite.
At about the 50-minute mark, I removed the paper label and noticed that the wrapper leaf changed. It looks like the smoking end has a darker wrapper than the rest of the cigar – something I didn’t notice at the beginning.
Final Thoughts:
When the wrapper changed, of course, the flavors changed as well. The sweet, smokey flavors of the first two-thirds of the cigar were subtly replaced with flavors more typical of a maduro leaf.
While the flavor change wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, the change did transition the cigar from something fairly unique to something… fairly common and less special.
However, in the end, the Kentucky Fire Cured Just a Friend Toro is still a good cigar. Had the distinctive flavors of the first half remained through the entire smoke, this cigar would’ve ranked higher.
The burn was good but slightly wavy and uneven. The draw was just a little tight, but not terrible. And, the price is right. All signs of a good cigar.
For me, the Drew Estate Kentucky Fire Cured Just a Friend Toro earns a CigarScore 4 and I’d smoke it again for sure. Had the unique flavors lasted the entire time, a 5 it would’ve earned.
