Description

The Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Stillwell Star is a totally different approach to cigars and cigar making. A unique combination of cigar tobacco and premium pipe tobacco.

All of the cigar and pipe tobaccos used are amongst the finest available, no expenses spared. Each of the pipe tobacco recipes is meticulously crafted in small batches by Reeves utilizing only the best tobaccos and techniques. And each of the cigar ligas was carefully tailored by Saka to specifically showcase and enhance the nuances that each of the pipe blends add to the cigar.

The end result is a truly mesmerizing smoking experience. Four unique cigars each with its own personality, deftly blended to afford the smoker the nuances of the flavors and aromas of the pipe blends, yet working in concert with the black cigar tobaccos. Balance, measured, refined and elegant are all hallmarks of StillWell Star.

Aromatic No. 1 Tasting Notes

The finest of aromatic Black Cavendish, Golden Virginia and Burley pipe tobaccos added to a mild, Nicaraguan puro to provide a delightfully smooth and exceptionally room pleasing note making it not only a joy for the smoker, but for those around them. Each cigar is delicately finished with a cabeza dulce.

Aromatic No. 22 Tasting Notes

This is a delightful aromatic puro with a carefully balanced selection of mild Cavendish Burley and choice Virginia tobaccos. Unlike the Aromatic No. 1, this release does not feature a dulce cabeza, however the tobaccos themselves are wonderfully sweet to the tongue – the flavor and aroma are nothing short of exceptional. Formerly the Holiday 2022 blend.

English No. 27 Tasting Notes

A quintessential mix of Burley and Turkish leaf with a generous portion of Cypriot Latakia pressed cake paired with Nicaraguan cigar tobaccos. Rich and decadent while not being overpowering, this is a Latakia-Lover’s puro worthy of being smoked in an English Manor House beside the fire.

Bayou No. 32 Tasting Notes

A combination of Bright and Red Virginia leaf with the most select St. James Parish Perique pipe tobacco added to a medium-bodied Nicaraguan puro. This liga begins the mildest of all, but the Perique really kicks up in the end with a spicy finish. It rewards the smoker with that classic “VaPer” combination of zest and umami that is entrancing for the discerning palate.

Navy No. 1056 Tasting Notes

A crumble cake of stoved Red and Golden Virginia tobaccos with a touch of “Naval Rations” combined with Orientals and Latakia expertly blended with dark air-cured black cigar leaf. This puro rewards the smoker with a unique, medium bodied aromatic indulgence.

Holiday Y2024 Tasting Notes

A tradition in Pipe Culture is for carvers to craft one-off pipe designs and for blenders to create special mixtures to smoke and mark the Holidays. In honor of this practice, we at have blended this unique limited production Nicaraguan puro with a mild mix of aromatic pipe leaf with a buttery soft shade capa. It offers the smoker a delicious smoking experience with a sublime room note.

    Initial Thoughts
If you’re looking to try something new in the cigar world, take a look at the Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Stillwell Star line of cigars. Instead of normal cigar leaves, the Stillwell Stars all have pipe tobacco inside.

The Dunbarton T&T Stillwell Star Navy No. 1056 Toro is a very aromatic cigar. Like most pipe tobacco, its aroma is musty and sweet.

Once lit, the smell of the smoke was quite nice. The initial flavors were quite spicy.

Is the Stillwell Star Navy a cigar for pipe lovers? Does it bridge the gap between shredded tobacco and long filler? These are the questions we’ll discuss in the video below.

    CigarScore: 3
    Brand: Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust
    Line: Stillwell Star Navy
    Size: 6 x 52
    Cut: Guillotine
    Light: Torch

    Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
    Binder: Mexico
    Filler: Undisclosed
    Smoke Time: 84 minutes

Through the middle of the Dunbarton T&T Stillwell Star Navy No. 1056 Toro, I ran into significant construction problems. The burn was uneven due to moisture in the stem of the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper leaf. Also, there was a hollow spot that impacted the draw and decreased the smoke time.

    Final Thoughts

After the burn issues worked themselves out, I was able to smoke the Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Stillwell Star Navy No. 1056 Toro for about an hour and a half. And, after those 90 or so minutes, this cigar was okay.

It was just alright. This cigar is unlikely to get cigar smokers to try pipes, nor is it likely to get pipe smokers to try cigars. If Steve Saka, who likely blended this cigar, had gone all in on pipe tobacco, the result probably would be more interesting, have a better taste, and possibly even appeal to a broader audience.

This cigar is a cigar caught between two worlds, and I don’t think it succeeds at either one. It’s just okay, and it’s a little expensive for what you get. The Dunbarton T&T Stillwell Star Navy No. 1056 Toro earns a CigarScore 3.
