Description

The Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo is the embodiment of the Nicaraguan “power” cigar. The dark, oily, Nicaraguan Corojo Oscuro wrapper serves as foreshadowing for the extra full-bodied flavors of it’s complex and pungent blending of mature, locally cultivate leaves.

    Initial Thoughts:
In general, we’re fans of Joya de Nicaragua cigars here at the CigarScore studios. Like Gran Habano, JdN generally makes a good cigar at a fair price. So, when I wanted something I thought I’d enjoy, I grabbed today’s cigar, the Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo El Martillo.

After pulling the cigar from its cellophane, it looked good and smelled good, so let’s dive in!

On the nearly-perfect cold draw and after a quick snip with my guillotine cutter, the Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo El Martillo had a really nice flavor of milk chocolate, like the air surrounding a chocolate bar. Once the cigar was lit, I was greeted with nice flavors of Nicaraguan tobaccos that were both sweet and spicy.

Once I’d been smoking the Antano Darko Corojo for about 10 minutes the draw did tighten up a little bit. Also, the burn was good but not perfect, and the after taste became a little smoky.

    CigarScore: 4
    Brand: Joya de Nicaragua
    Line: Antano Dark Corojo
    Size: 5 1/2 x 54
    Cut: Guillotine
    Light: Torch

    Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo Oscuro
    Binder: Nicaragua
    Filler: Nicaragua
    Smoke Time: 80 minutes

Through the middle of the cigar, the tight draw didn’t get any better. While more tobacco is often a good thing, too much often leads to draw issues, and that’s where I found myself half-way through this cigar. I also noticed that this cigar made me quite thirsty. The flavors were also pretty good, but not as bold as Joya de Nicaragua claimed on their website.

    Final Thoughts:

Throughout my time with the Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo El Martillo, the smoke fluctuated between a perfect draw and a fairly tight draw, leading to a mixed experience. For the most part, the cigar delivered an even burn. And, the flavors were pretty good, but I think they could be great if the cigar had aged for a couple of years.

Right off the shelf, this cigar wasn’t quite ready. However, it comes in at a great price and the flavors were still pretty darn good, so the Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo El Martillo earns a CigarScore 4.
