Ellory Wells –
What do you get when one of the oldest names in cigars hires one of the oldest families in tobacco to make a cigar? You get the Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua.
If I’m being perfectly honest, I don’t smoke a lot of Romeo y Julieta cigars. They a brand that seems to have fallen out of relevance over the past couple of decades, and their cigars tend to not have the richness and complexity I want. However, when RyJ’s parent company General Cigar hired Plasencia to make a cigar for them, I was… interested to say the least.
Initial Thoughts
The Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua was a light-brown, great looking cigar. The thin veins in the Nicaraguan wrapper were well pressed, and the cigar looked great.
After cutting the end with my guillotine cigar cutter, the draw had about the right amount of resistance and offer up pre-light flavors that were like sawdust. Once lit, the first puffs had hints of graham cracker and a faint sweetness.
A few puffs into the Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua and all of the sweetness disappeared. What was left were flavors that were woody and mild with hints of spice.

Final Thoughts
I was able to smoke the the Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua toro for an hour and 19 minutes. And, for the most part, it was mild with periods of spiciness.
While the flavors weren’t a home run for me, the cigar did taste pretty good and I cannot complain. There just weren’t a lot of rich, complex flavor notes beyond the leather, wood and spice. The sweetness I tasted in the first five minutes quickly disappeared and never showed up again.
The construction of the Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua toro was decent. Smoke billowed from the cigar on each puff and the draw was great. The only issue was the uneven burn, but it remained consistently even after it got to about a 45 degree angle.
Other than the burn issue, this cigar performed very well. And, even though I didn’t love the flavors, they were good, and you might like them quite a bit. The Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua toro earns a CigarScore 4.
